hardest part is starting

I knew it was for me. I had all the excuses in the world.

I was a stay at home mom, tending to 2 kiddos, and pretty much eating what they ate and sleeping when they slept. I was exhausted all the time. Even at nighttime, both kids still woke up for a very long time, and I had what I call “mom related anxiety” that kept me up anyway!

I saw a program late night, whilst eating ice cream and probably a glass of wine. Classy right? You know how the strangest infomercials come on in the middle of the night? Well one did-and it didn’t seem so strange to me. It pulled me in, and go figure it was for an at home fitness program called P90X. I ordered it immediately.

I didn’t know much about gyms, I didn’t really know what personal trainers did, all I knew is that I had to do something. I had a young child and a 7 month old baby…so I was definitely cleared to workout! I didn’t have any workout gear. All I had was 2 giant Aunt Jemima syrup bottles that weighed 5 lbs each. I kid you not-that was my workout equipment for 3 months of P90X.

It was NOT EASY AT FIRST! I hated it! I knew what it felt like to be in shape (thank you Marine Corps) so I knew how out of shape I was. But I was determined to make it work. The next step was finding the time.  I figured since my oldest went to school for a short time during the day that happened to be during my baby’s daily nap (lucky if she took it) than I could possibly squeeze in a workout. So that’s exactly what I did. Some days were hit or miss, but I worked out according to the schedule 80% of the time.  Come day 90-I had lost almost 30 lbs.


I couldn’t believe it. The syrup bottles worked, as well as some sneaky time management. I even won a transformation contest and met Tony Horton, went on to appear on QVC on national LIVE television to promote P90X as a success story, and do some really cool stuff like get certified from going to a workshop in California with Tony Horton . But to keep my momentum with fitness going, I needed equipment and that is where my love affair with the gym came into my life.

Why am I telling you this? Because if I would have known then what I know now, I would have taken P90X to the gym and/or hired a trainer. Sometimes our ego’s get in the way (I know mine did) and we are afraid to ask for help or feel insecure. I do believe everything in my life happened for a reason, so I am very grateful.

Never underestimate the power of accountability. All you have to do is show up because that is literally the hardest part. Once you start with that small but mighty habit..everything else is gravy.

The start is what stops most people. Don’t let it stop you.
